Find your passion, feed your soul

I once told a friend that I thought my weight issues became more pronounced when I was bored. She promptly rolled her eyes and said “Duh!”. The thing is, I didn’t mean bored for an hour or an afternoon. I meant, bored with life. Bored with the routines that often hold life together in a positive way but that can also suck the life out of us. I knew that I needed to find a way to express and experience my passions as a part of my routine. In the midst of the duties of life, I knew I had to find room for the dreams of life.

When I travel, for instance, I always lose weight. Seems odd since I’m out of my usual environment and not always able to find the healthiest food to eat (but delicious alternatives aplenty.) Yet, without fail, I always lose weight. The endless challenges and constant stimulation that seeing and doing new things that travel provides always seems to “feed” me. And when that happens, I don’t eat as much.

For me, travel is a passion and being a visual person, the experience of seeing new things may be the most important thing I can do for myself, on a spiritual level. I truly feel if we could find a way to include and express our true selves, find our passions, more often in our daily lives, we would find much more benefit than we expect. We need to find a way to include them as part of our routine, to make time for them even when there seems to be no time.

Travel is not always possible, or even desirable. But ask yourself, what are the passions that feed you? You may have to dig down if it’s been a long time since you were able to make time for dreams in your life. Go for a walk, pick up a pen, call an old friend. There are a lot of ways you can reconnect with yourself. But please, take the time. It’s worth the effort. There are many excellent books on creativity and connecting with your inner self. I encourage you to seek some out.

My favorite technique when I’m trying to work something out is to get a big pad of newsprint, and a colored marker. I know it sounds like kids play, but that’s the point. Don’t make it too serious; have fun. Doodle and write. Write about what your perfect life would look like. Write lots of detail, and in that detail see the small things that would make your life happier, more a reflection of who you are on the inside.

Having discovered some passions, can you find a way to include one or more of them in your life on a regular basis? In my opinion, you must try. Barriers to your success will be everywhere. Certainly time may be a great constraint, and possibly money. But, while you may not be able to set up an entire room, for example, to practice a craft, you most likely can find a corner of a room to call your own. Find some small way in which you can experience the feeling of connecting with those inner desires and you will feel your satisfaction with life improve. Let go of the old excuses and just do it! Your payoff in health and increased energy will be worth it.
