Gorp

Known by many names, such as trail mix, gorp is a mix and match snack that is healthy and portable. A staple for hikers and campers, it can also come in handy for urban wanderers.

I commonly buy a premixed variety known locally as Youth mix. It’s a delicious combination of peanuts, raisins, sunflower seeds, pecans, cashews, almonds and sesame sticks.

But you can easily mix your own to suit your taste. In addition to the above ingredients, try any of these:

-walnuts

-dried cranberries (or any dried berry)

-shredded coconut

-pretzels (unsalted)

-carob chips

-granola

I generally recommend that you choose unsalted nuts. If that is too bland for your taste it’s okay to add a small quantity of salted to a larger quantity of unsalted. If you’re trying to lose weight remember to control consumption. ¼ (for an all-nut mixture) to ½ cup (if there’s lots of other things mixed in with the nuts), should be adequate as a snack.

This is a terrific treat that will sate your appetite and provide healthy oils and protein. Keep a bag at work or in the glove box for a healthy snack on the go. Just remember that any food that contains oil, nuts for instance, can go rancid so replenish on a regular basis.
