Healthy recipes

Maintaining a healthy diet means cooking with healthy recipes and bypassing the shortcuts to cooking that are so tempting in our busy lives. It's time to get back into the kitchen and put together healthy meals using real food.

It is certainly tempting to rely on fast food during a busy week, and every now and then, that's okay. But if you know the pizza delivery guy by his first name, it's probably happening too often.

Even if you are accustomed to preparing most meals at home, you may be relying too heavily on convenience products and short changing yourself on the health benefits that natural and unprocessed foods can give.

I'm not suggesting that you throw out all of your favorite recipes and start completely new; that's probably not necessary. But if you want to get healthy, you're going to have to be honest about your diet and it's shortcomings.

Just for the record, I am a cookbook junkie but I rarely follow a recipe to the letter. It's a lot more fun to use them as inspiration, then give things a twist and use ingredients that I have and love.

Pull out your favorite recipes and see where you can improve on them and turn them into healthy recipes. In many cases just making a few substitutions could make the difference. Here are some ideas for changing what you cook and the way you cook it.
