Make time to exercise
Let’s face it, life is full of time challenges. Even when everything is running on schedule, it may still be tough to find the time to do all the things we want to do. Somehow "Make time to exercise" often ends up in the no-time-today list.
I know the problem and struggle with it all the time. But I also know what happens to me when I don’t get the exercise that my body craves. I don’t sleep as well, I don’t think as clearly, and worst of all, I feel that I have let myself down because I have failed to make time for me. I’m not talking about training for a triathlon here. Rather, just making time for 30 minutes of expending energy, getting fresh air, taking a breather from whatever is bugging you or demanding your attention. You know, the issues that sometimes drive you to the refrigerator. My 30-minute walk is my sanity pill and no matter what the weather, I crave it. When I can’t get outside I find a place to walk indoors because that’s better than nothing. Or I borrow dvd’s from the library and do a belly dance routine (not well, but no one is watching) or follow an aerobics instructor. I get out my exercise mat and do some yoga and free weights. You can just turn on the stereo and dance for a while, whatever makes you happy. Just do it and your body will thank you. You may have to get up early to accomplish this. Or possibly, and this works for me, get into whatever exercise you have chosen as soon as you finish work. I find if I get settled down at home, I often don’t want to go out again (especially in January, in Canada). So, as soon as I get home I pull on an extra layer of everything, change into my hiking boots and away I go. Not only am I getting my exercise but it’s a great way to “exorcise” the demons of the workday. Breath deep and let it go. You know your schedule and you know where the opportunities exist. Find one and make it work for you. If you drive to work, park a distance away and walk to the office. Take the stairs. Walk on your lunch hour. If you’re lucky enough to work at a place that offers exercise and fitness classes, well…DUH! Sorry, but I couldn’t help myself.
If you want to be healthy, you’re going to have to make a commitment to yourself to move your body each and every day. Exercise is about oxygen and energy and engagement. Your body will benefit but so will your mind.
